location in the Aegean Sea combining high wave potential and different infrastructure needed to support <strong>E<\/strong><strong>THOS<\/strong> device; and define the environmental design conditions; \u25cf establish the general basis for the OWC device taking into account its power efficiency based on the environmental conditions at the installation location (layout, number and type of oscillating chambers, dimensions, weight, PTO characteristics etc.); \u25cf define the proper mooring system characteristics (type, line length, diameter, weight, stiffness, pretension level etc.); \u25cf evaluate the frequency dependent first order hydrodynamic properties of the OWC device; the dynamic pressure fluctuation and the associated air flow rate inside the OWC chambers; the water surface elevation inside the annular water areas; \u25cf solve the coupled motion equation and evaluate the motions of the OWC device and its power efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Description of Work:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.1:<\/u><\/strong><strong> OWC Devices: State-of-the-art: <\/strong>In the present Task the state-of-the-art of the decided driven parameters and technologies will be integrated and presented in an overall system approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.2:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Selection of a representative installation location and definition of the environmental design conditions for the selected location: <\/strong>In the present task a representative installation location in the Aegean Sea will be defined. This area has to combine high wave potential and infrastructure ability, such as connection to the grid, skilled labor force, and crane capacity, to support <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> OWC. T1.2 will provide the necessary input for T1.3, 1.5, T1.6 defining the design values of the environmental conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.3:<\/u><\/strong><strong> General arrangement of the OWC device and its components: <\/strong>The aim of the task is to establish the general layout and dimensions of the OWC device and its components (draft, displacement, thickness, chamber diameter etc.). Towards this goal a parametric geometric analysis will be conducted for various number of oscillating chambers in order to define the proper arrangement for efficient operation at the selected installation location (see T1.2). Furthermore, this task aims at defining the characteristics of the air turbine aiming at the wave energy absorption maximization. Commercial (MIKE21 MA) and home developed software (HAMVAB) will be used. T1.3 will provide the design envelope of the OWC device for the corresponding analysis foreseen in T1.4-T1.6, and experimental campaign in WP2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.4:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Hydrodynamic analysis of the OWC device: <\/strong>The objective of the task is to carry out first- and second- order hydrodynamic calculations (exciting wave forces; hydrodynamic parameters; mean second order drift forces) for the restrained to the wave impact OWC device, together with the evaluation of the water surface elevation inside the concentric annular water areas in the device and the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the chambers, along with the air flow rate to the air turbine. Home developed software will be used (HAMVAB). The outcome of T1.4 will be input for T1.6 concerning the coupled hydro-aero-dynamic analysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.5:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Mooring system global characteristics: <\/strong>The objective of the task is to define the geometrical and inertial characteristics of the mooring system (mooring line length; diameter, weight etc.), its stiffness and the pretension level using commercial (MIKE21 MA) and home developed software (DESCABLE). The mooring characteristics will be properly induced in the coupled motion equation of the OWC device (see T1.6)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 1.6:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Coupled hydro-aero-dynamic analysis of the OWC device: <\/strong>The objective of the task is to solve the coupled hydro-aero-dynamic motion equation of the OWC device in the frequency domain. To this end, an additional equation containing the volume flows inside the chambers will be used. Finally, the OWCs\u2019 efficiency will be estimated regarding its selected designing parameters. The present task is directly interrelated with WP2 which is dealing with the scaled-down experiments and the numerical validation procedure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Deliverables:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Deliverable 1.1:<\/u><\/strong><strong> OWC Device: State-of-the-art report (2<sup>nd<\/sup> month, 1<sup>st<\/sup> year): <\/strong>State-of-the art report describing the driven parameters and technologies that will be integrated in the overall system approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Deliverable 1.2:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Environmental conditions report (3<sup>th<\/sup> month, 1<sup>st<\/sup> year): <\/strong>Report on the environmental conditions and construct the scaled-down <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> OWC device; \u25cf conduct physical model tests in the wave tank of the Laboratory of Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics (LSMH) for the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> OWC device under operational and extreme environmental conditions at the selected installation location; \u25cf analyze the results from the physical model tests and validate numerical models by comparing them against the experimental results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Description of Work:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 2.1<\/u><\/strong><strong>: Design of experiments and experimental set-up for scaled-down model tests: <\/strong>The objectives of the task are: (a) to define the scaling factor and the corresponding sea state conditions (regular, irregular and extreme conditions) based on the environmental characteristic described in T1.2; (b) to design the scaled-down OWC based on the proposed design from T1.3; (c) selection of the measuring instrumentation. A scaled-down model of the OWC device will be designed in this task for the experimental work in LSMH of NTUA. The model will be designed in accordance to the dimensions of the wave tank (90m length x 3m depth x 4.5m wide) to accommodate the specific general arrangement of the OWC (Task 1.3), and operational and extreme sea state conditions in the selected in Task 1.2 location in the Aegean Sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 2.2<\/u><\/strong><strong>: Manufacturing of the components and construction of the scaled-down model: <\/strong>The objective of the task is to construct the scaled-down prototype. The experimental set-up will have been defined in T2.1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 2.3<\/u><\/strong><strong>: Conducting scaled-down physical model tests: <\/strong>The experiments with the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> scaled-down model that was manufactured in T2.2 will be conducted in the LSMH at NTUA. Motions of the device, free surface elevation in the air chamber, forces on the mooring lines, as well as parameters characterizing the OWC will be measured for the operational and extreme environmental conditions at the installation site selected in T1.2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 2.4:<\/u><\/strong> <strong>Analysis of the results from the physical model tests and validation of the numerical models: <\/strong>This task is dedicated to the analysis of the experimental data and validation of the numerical models by comparison with experimental public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Description of Work:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 3.1:<\/u><\/strong><strong> ETHOS manual: <\/strong>This task is dedicated to the development of the main deliverable of the project the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> manual, where the <strong>ETHOS <\/strong>concept will be presented in detail. The manual will contain all the technical information and figures from the foreseen in the project deliverables, in a comprehensive format, providing useful information for the design of a similar OWC system in another installation location.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 3.2:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Dissemination and Communication of ETHOS results: <\/strong>The results obtained from the <strong>ETHOS <\/strong>project and the relevant know-how will be disseminated to the international renewable energy community through international conferences and scientific journals. <strong>ETHOS <\/strong>aims at presenting a significant amount of publications during the endeavor (i.e., 3-4 publications). Indicative scientific journals, well-established in the area of marine structures and offshore energy are: Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, International Journal of Marine Energy, Journal of Ocean Engineering &amp; Marine Energy, Energies, Journal of Marine Science &amp; Application, Applied Ocean Research, Ocean Engineering. Furthermore, a \u201cdynamic\u201d web page containing the scope, the objectives and the major outcomes of the project will be developed and frequently updated (with sections such as project information, news, Living Lab results, hyperlinks to social<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">media, etc.). The <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> project will be also promoted through social network platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) to gain public exposure allowing for direct feedback from the target audience. A unique project \u201chashtag\u201d will be created to monitor the public awareness on the project and increase social acceptance of the new wave energy conversion technology. <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> project aims at developing new efficient tools such as non-technical promotional and teaser videos prepared for alumni with the project process. In addition, lecture presentations with the scientific outcomes of the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> project will be prepared for graduate students in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, NTUA, as well as post-graduate students in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and School of Civil Engineering, NTUA, in which three of the research members (i.e., the Coordinator-Assist. Professor D. Konispoliatis, Prof. I. Chatjigeorgiou and Prof. G. Grigoropoulos) are lecturing.\u00a0 The lectures will also include relevant videos with the scaled-down construction as well as with the experimental tests in NTUA\u2019s wave tank enlightening the scientific background of the proposed project. Finally, <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> aims to develop promotional project brochure and a commercial flyer with the description and outcomes of the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong> device, distributed to the Towards this purpose, the coordinator will: \u25cf develop standard protocols, common procedures, and formats to be followed by the research team; \u25cf monitor closely and constantly the activities of each team member for potential conflicts, mitigating risks; \u25cf continuously evaluate the scientific and budgetary progress according to schedule; \u25cf carry out a smooth and efficient financial and administrative management of the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Description of Work:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 4.1:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Establishment of an efficient management process of the ETHOS project: <\/strong>On a day-to-day basis, the coordinator will monitor the overall process towards the successful completion of the project, as well as the exploitation of the knowledge in relevant WPs through the interrelation with relevant tasks. To achieve this, the coordinator will oversee deadlines and make sure milestones and deliverables are met in time. Moreover, the aim of this task is the continuous evaluation of the project\u2019s progress based on the degree of fulfilment of each WP\u2019s objectives and stewarding the budgetary progress according to schedule. The monitoring procedure will be held through a Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, identifying, and mitigating also any risks that might occur or conflicts that might arise during the progress of the <strong>ETHOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 4.2:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Financial management: <\/strong>The objective of T4.2 is to administrate of the ELIDEK financial contribution and distribute of funds. The coordinator will be responsible for the financial management through keeping records and financial accounts of the distribution of the ELIDEK financial contribution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 4.3:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Monitoring of project activities and reporting to ELIDEK services: <\/strong>This task aims to ensure the continuous required reporting to the ELIDEK\u2019s services regarding collection of data and deliverables foreseen in the project. Furthermore, the coordinator will be responsible for communicating to ELIDEK any minor or major coordination and implementation changes in the description of the work that may occur during the process of <strong>ETHOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Task 4.4:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Data management and intellectual property strategy: <\/strong>An efficient Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) strategy helps the research team members to manage the project\u2019s outcomes in a professional manner, maximizing their commercial benefits, by keeping in parallel <strong>ETHOS <\/strong>results as open as possible. Thus, a strategy to protect and exploit IPR, will be established and treated to comply with the \u201cAs Open as possible, as Closed as necessary\u201d principles.
